Philosophy - Goals

Junior High School, by and large, is the most decisive educational step, as it coincides with the transition of pupils from childhood to adolescence. An extremely critical period for the personal, social and spiritual development of the individual, often characterized by uncertainty, defiance and curiosity.

At Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi, we ensure that the passage of pupils from Elementary to High school is as smooth as possible. Having mastered the fundamental concepts and basic knowledge of the Primary classes, students are tasked to expand and elaborate scientifically on new subjects.

Comprising an excellent learning environment, the High School of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi, offers its students a substantial educational background that forms the foundation of their future progress. Gradually and consistently, students develop all the necessary skills to overcome the challenges of today’s rapidly changing world. Through our school, they are armed with creativity and the ability to work effectively towards building a successful future, thus seamlessly setting in place an important stepping stone to happiness.

 

In the High School of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi, our teenage students:

  • acquire knowledge that will provide the basis for their progress in Senior High (lyceum) and their overall intellectual development

Curriculum

The Junior High School programme of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi includes the complete syllabus specified by the Ministry of Education but implements it with additional hours approved of by the Ministry of Education. The High School of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi:

– Enhances the curriculum of the Ministry of Education with extra hours of teaching in subjects such as Mathematics, Modern Greek Language and Exposition, Physics, Foreign Language (English), Foreign Language (French or German)

-Extends the curriculum of the Ministry of Education with additional activities and programmes such as Innovative Programmes, Sports Activities and Groups

The curriculum of the Junior High School (Gymnasium) is based on:

The experiential approach – Students approach knowledge not only theoretically, but also experientially, through innovative programs and projects, role plays, laboratory experiments, visits and outside school activities, etc.

Interdisciplinarity – Students perceive and comprehend the sciences involved in the study of a subject through the innovative methodologies followed while teaching the courses and the joint-teaching sessions carried out by teachers of different specialties/subjects in order to increase their capacity for learning. This allows them to transcend the boundaries of a lesson, assimilating knowledge from diverse subjects, approaching a subject from different perspectives, thus increasing their cognitive level and broadening their intellectual horizons.

Academic Sectors

Ancient and Modern Greek Language - Literature

At Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi it is of primary importance to cultivate speech:

as properly composed, well formed, well-structured, and reasoned thought

as an expression, complete, correct, comprehensive, clear, accurate and attractive, and

as a means of effective communication

This goal is achieved in the courses of Ancient and Modern Greek Language and Literature, utilizing:

  • in addition to group correction in the classroom, personalized correction in an individual meeting, which gives each student the opportunity to use the philologist’s feedback and focus on his personal weaknesses and gradually improve his written speech
  • state-of-the-art media such as interactive whiteboards, digital classroom, the computer room, the electronic platform

  • an interdisciplinary, experiential approach and differentiated learning
  • pioneering collaborative programmes, which make use of simulated situations and teacher/student initiatives

Mathematics

At Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi , the cultivation of mathematical thinking is of primary importance:

Natural Sciences

Biology, Physics, Chemistry

At Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi science teaching is of key importance since it enables students:

  • to learn to work following a scientific method (collecting information, confirming or refuting cases, organizing and analyzing thought, processing data and presenting it)
  • to interpret natural phenomena
  • to familiarize themselves with the processes involved in experiments, careful planning, data analysis and extracting conclusions

Humanities

Ancient Greek Literature from translation: Epic poetry (“Homer’s Odyssey”), Dramatic poetry (tragedy), Historiography (Herodotus, Thucydides)

History, Philosophy, Geography, Religion, Home Economics, Social and Political Education

Humanities courses are treated as an excellent source of culture and therefore constitute an indispensable part of the school’s Junior High School (Gymnasium) programme. By assimilating knowledge from these courses, the student:

  • attains an all-encompassing educational level, essential for his adult life
  • understands, appreciates and becomes well-versed in the classical humanitarian principles and values ​​- namely concepts such as logos, ethos, pathos, beauty, virtue, the optimum, good measure, democracy, free will, sovereignty, fairness, freedom, prosperity and valour, peace, cooperation- which not only underlie ancient Greek culture, but also, European civilizations
  • can incorporate historical events in chronological order and continuity and compose a complete picture of the historical evolution of Greece, Europe and world civilization
  • can produce critical and comparative appraisals of events and personalities in Greek and world history
  • studies the Orthodox religion, being exposed at the same time to other doctrines and religions in order to acquire a profound religious awareness free of intolerance, dogmatism and exclusion
  • acquires essential knowledge of the geophysical, economic and productive environment of our country and the world in which man evolves
  • effectively explores the economy, the terms and conditions, the objectives, the means and the tools that ensure the staple – but not only – human needs, livelihood, production, etc.

These objectives are effected through:

  • cross-curricular projects, individual and group work
  • presenting the work to the class or the entire school community in the auditorium in order to enhance communication skills further
  • the use of technology (interactive whiteboards, the digital class and electronic platform)
  • themed rooms
  • the History and Economics clubs for students with a particular inclination for and interest in these subjects
  • specific training programmes preparing for Youth Entrepreneurship Competitions

Technology - Information Technology

Through Technology and Information Technology, the student learns:

  • to work practically and methodically while investigating and analyzing a problem
  • to apply practical skills by thinking creatively in order to solve a problem
  • to plan strategies for completing a project
  • to build models and devise original products that provide solutions to everyday life problems
  • to develop critical and creative thinking skills

These objectives are effected through:

  • workshops of Informatics and Technology-Robotics with state-of-the-art equipment
  • projects, constructions, cross-curricular projects
  • the Informatics, Robotics and F1 in Schools clubs for students with a particular inclination for and interest in specific sciences
  • special training programs for IT, Technology and F1 in Schools competitions

Foreign Languages

English, French or German, Chinese

In the High School of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi, students are systematically and fully supported by foreign language teachers to gain excellent communication skills both in the basic compulsory foreign language (English) and in their secondary foreign language of choice (French or German), as well as for the acquisition of certificates in:

  • English (B2 – Cambridge First Certificate of English, C1-Cambridge Advanced, and C2-Cambridge Proficiency)
  • French (B1, B2 of the Institute Francais)
  • the German language (B1, B2 of the Goethe Institut and the OSD Institut)

It should be noted that optionally, for those students who chose to, there is an additional programme for the acquisition of the Chinese language.

Enhanced teaching of the English language

English is the basic foreign language at Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi, which is taught from Pre-Kindergarten to the Third Grade. In order to cultivate communicative fluency in English and acquire it as a mother tongue, which is the goal of our School, beyond the English lesson, students

  • are taught in English, courses such as Home Economics
  • engage in drama through the English Drama Club
  • become involved in Forensics – which is comprised of Debate, Oratory, Duet Acting, Oral Interpretation and Impromptu events
  • participate in English-language Panhellenic and International Conferences of the United Nations (Harvard Model Congress Europe, The Hague International Model United Nations, etc.) and English language Panhellenic and International Competitions of Forensics and Debate (World Scholar’s Cup & Tournament of Champions at Yale, the Panhellenic Forensics Competition, Deree Debate Invitational Tournament, International Competition for Young Debaters, etc.)
  • attend summer education programmes at Universities in Great Britain and America
  • participate in the English Summer Camp
  • take part in the free of charge, supplementary summer lessons

The excellent level of English acquisition is evidenced by the high rates of success in examinations and by the outstanding distinctions at a Panhellenic, European and International level that the students of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi achieve each year through their participation in Conferences and Competitions.

 

 

Sports

At Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi special emphasis is given to Athletic Activities, that enrich the daily programmeme of the students of the Junior High School.

The School’s modern facilities can fully meet the students’ needs for fitness and training as well as providing them with an outlet for expression, through individual and group sports, simultaneously catering for their need to connect and integrate.

In Junior High School, each student chooses two sports activities, attending each one once a week.

Through their participation in sports activities, pupils have the opportunity to participate in both in-school, interschool, Panhellenic and European championships.

 

Arts

The Arts programme in Junior High School includes Visual Arts and Music.

Art Exhibitions

Junior High School is a very important educational grade for the pupil’s evolution and is crucial to his or her orientation. The connection of artistic expression with a social and historical background gives the student the possibility

  • to evaluate and perceive art forms of his time, while at the same time becoming an artist himself
  • to become aware of the environment and himself
  • to sharpen his visual perception
  • to nurture imagination and reverie that is the basis of all forms of creation
  • to realize and cultivate his skills and preferences
  • to prepare for his role as a future citizen

The specific curriculum is modeled on the proposals of the general curriculum and can include pencil or pen-sketching, painting with water-soluble colors, graphic design, wire and pulp sculpting, linoleum engraving and other objects, often through the study of works by distinguished artists.

The Arts lesson is held in the two fully-equipped Visual Arts Labs of our School. In addition, those students who are particularly inclined and interested in visual arts join the Visual Arts Club and participate in Panhellenic and International Competitions with exceptional distinctions.

 

Music

The objectives underlying the lesson of Music are:

  • nurturing aesthetic pleasure in listening, performing and creating music as one of the manifestations of artistic expression and creativity of man
  • the acquisition of basic music education, such as the historical evolution of music, the recognition of musical instruments, the distinction of musical movements, as well as learning to read and write music.
  • the cultivation of a positive attitude towards music through an awareness of its importance in the historical development of all cultures
  • its contribution to the pupil’s mental and aesthetic refinement
  • The two music rooms in the school have been especially designed and adequately equipped to cater for the needs of the lesson

The lesson takes place in the two specially-designed music rooms of our School, which have the necessary equipment.

In addition, students who have an aptitude for and are interested in music may join the Choir Club and the Music Club and participate in the Panhellenic Choir Festival and in concerts.

 

Coordination of Academic Departments

Each academic department

  • holds weekly meetings, in the presence of the Head Teacher
  • monitors and coordinates the curriculum development
  • designs and develops teaching-aid material
  • assesses students’ performance in summative tests, organizes booster courses
  • records the cognitive and language skills that must be developed in class while teaching the material specified by the syllabus
  • meets regularly and reflects on issues of evaluation and teaching, applying modern teaching methods with the creative use of new technologies, aiming at self-motivation and the creative initiative of the student
  • makes use of audiovisual material to enrich the teaching process
  • invites prominent scientists and professionals of various fields to talk to the students
  • encourages and supports the participation of students in pan-Hellenic competitions
  • organizes training workshops for teachers
  • collaborates with all the Academic Departments to organize joint activities, aiming to achieve the common educational and pedagogical goals of the school.

Through the teaching methods at Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi:

  • we make use of multiple teaching methods and collaborative teaching, synthetic work, but also conventional teaching when it is deemed necessary for better assimilation of the course objectives by the teacher.

The teachers’ work is further effected through the use of:

  • themed rooms, where the student is inspired to learn in an environment that alludes to the subject at hand (such as History, Maths and Literature classrooms, etc.)
  • fully-equipped laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Technology, Visual Arts) that help in the experiential approach of knowledge.

Student Counsellor

Considering the significant changes experienced by students during their transition from primary school to high school, from one teacher to many different subject teachers, a student Counsellor is appointed in all classes of the High School.

The teacher counsellor:

  • approaches each student personally and listens to their teen concerns
  • observes and records the academic, emotional, social needs of each student
  • advises, encourages, guides
  • if necessary, plans together with the student, an individual programme of studying that will help the student achieve his/her goals
  • plans initiatives for collective actions in order to improve student relations and smoothly solve any issues that arise
  • conducts class discussions to elicit from teenagers the principles that should govern communication among team members
  • organizes experiential actions with the school psychologist, aiming at cultivating mutual respect and cooperation among the members of the group

Reinforcing Courses

At Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi there are support courses taught by our school teachers at no extra cost, aiming at:

  • filling gaps in weak learners
  • the empowerment of good students
  • the preparation of pupils for foreign language certificates
  • the organized preparation of pupils for their admission to Tertiary Education
  • the preparation of pupils for their participation in competitions

Evaluation

Evaluation

At Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi we firmly believe in the benefits from the objective assessment of students.

The child learns from an early age when his personality is still being formed, the principles of justice and meritocracy, and that you will reap the rewards of your hard work eventually.

Through objective assessment, students Junior High School know their real potential and how to strive to improve in each lesson, according to the goals they have set for themselves.

Students are evaluated through daily through oral assessment or short quizzes, and with scheduled summative tests along with mock exams.

In addition to the analytical breakdown of a student’s marks on his report card, Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi makes use of the descriptive evaluation report. On the descriptive assessment report, the student’s individual performance for each academic sector is conveyed, as well as his behavior in individual and social tasks and settings, so that the student is aware of his strong points and weaknesses.

Specialized Programmes

Students, have the option of additional training on the subject they choose to further explore once a week (every Tuesday or Thursday) for two hours after the end of regular school timetable.

Through this programme, students advance their knowledge in their chosen subject with training that utilizes experiments in laboratories and workshops, placing at a focal point their interests and inclinations.

In these specialised programmes, students make the most of advanced knowledge, while their educational and scientific aptitude is further promoted and cultivated. At the same time, they have the opportunity to prepare appropriately for participation in Panhellenic, European and International Competitions and Olympiads, conducted by global associations, public and private educational institutions, and be distinguished, thus gaining valuable insights into their chosen topic and experience for both their CV and their subsequent academic and professional career.

 

It is aimed at students with an interest in and inclination for mathematics. Students have the opportunity to participate in competitions and consolidate their knowledge further.

The students of the Science Program are interested in fields of research and experimentation. Through their participation, they develop their skills and are prepared to participate in Panhellenic, European and International Competitions.

The Biology Programme focuses on research, which is conducted in a purely laboratory environment. Students acquire empirical knowledge that they apply at a practical level.

Students who have a particular interest in Information Technology have the opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge in programming, programming languages, to be involved in IT thinking and to participate in Competitions.

Through the Robotics Program, students with a grasp of New Technologies and Automation can be educated and distinguished by participating in the Robotic Team of both in the Panhellenic Robotic Competition and the Robotics Olympiad at an international level.

Students develop skills and knowledge in New Technologies and Automated Systems while participating in the F1 Team of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi and in Panhellenic and International Competitions where our school has received numerous distinctions over the years.

The Rhetoric Art Programme in English is aimed at students who are particularly interested in the English Language. Through their participation in Debates, Forensics and M.U.N. they can travel to foreign countries, learn about the culture of other countries, while boosting their oral and written skills in the English Language.

The Rhetoric Art Program in Greek addresses students who have a wider interest in “Speech” and its use as a medium of persuasion, argument and communication. Through their participation in Logos, they have the opportunity to cultivate their skills and to be distinguished as speakers.

Study Abroad Office

When choosing to study abroad, students of the last grade of Junior High school are informed about the programme by the GCE A-Levels Programme Director and by the Study Abroad Office.

Students receive information about studying abroad and the courses offered in English at universities in Europe and America.

They are also informed about courses offered in German or French at European Universities, a viable option thanks to the students’ certification of the language and their good communication skills.

Vocational Guidance Programme

High School students participate in the Personal Development and Vocational Guidance Programme.

The objective of the programme is to help students determine a career path that suits is appropriate for them, based on the specific features and characteristics of their personality, enhancing their self-awareness and highlighting their strengths.

The specific battery of questions used, evaluates the student in five key areas:

  • skills and personality traits
  • self-awareness
  • internal and external control
  • professional personality
  • professional interests

At the same time, high school visits to business premises are organized so that students can get an idea of the real working environment in different sectors and have the opportunity to talk with professionals in the field.

Furthermore, through the organization of Job Orientation Days on our school premises, students meet successful scientists and professionals in order to become better informed about the professional choices available to them.

Our school constitutes an ideal setting, secure and controlled, for a teenager to evolve as all the students comply with the regulations set in the school’s Code of Conduct. Supervision is enforced during the breaks as well as on excursions (field trips, day trips, etc). The Code of Conduct is strictly adhered to, without exception to issues of unruly behaviour, inappropriate dress, use of mobile phones on the school premises, etc.

Which helps the student through his participation in competitions and international conferences, come into contact with other young people his age,, to learn about the cultures if different countries, to develop skills pertinent to the conventions of the forums, and acquire an awareness of the international community in which he will live, study and evolve.

Following careful planning, the school compels all students to participate in programmes and competitions, in order to have the opportunity to learn how to strive to achieve a goal, to learn how to handle failure and success and to gain a sense of fulfillment not only from the final outcome of their efforts, but also from the journey they embarked on itself.

Clubs

In addition to its high quality academic and pedagogical work, Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi offers its students the opportunity to participate in clubs, led by teachers from its teaching staff or by external collaborators that are subject experts. Clubs aim at cultivating students’ natural inclinations and talents, providing them with an opportunity to engage in science and projects which they are particularly interested in.

Of particular importance is the fact that at our school ALL students are involved in a club of their choice as they form part of the compulsory curriculum.

Athletic Activities are a key component of our school’s Educational Program. We strive to ensure that Physical Education, is essentially achieved through coordinated, guided physical exercise, is accompanied by with emphasis on the process of smooth integration into the group, by cultivating discipline and self-discipline, compliance with rules, handling victory and defeat, always within the framework of fair play and well-meaning competition.

The aim of the School is for all students to have the opportunity to try many of the sports during their schooling. The Athletic Activities offered in the Senior High School of Ekpedeftiki Anagennisi are the following:
